about

When I was about five, my dad taught me how to play three chords on his Gretsch guitar. i listened to records of country western songs, and soon I was playing them on local TV shows in Minneapolis and charity shows around the state. In high school, I got into folk music and Bob Dylan. In college I heard John Koerner and Dave Ray and the vibrant West Bank music scene. I traveled to Paris with barely any money, and when I ran out, I played "Tangled Up in Blue" and "Blowing in the Wind" in the underground Metro to earn enough francs for dinner. Later in my life, I was lucky enough to play with Pete Seeger on a few picket lines, and I recorded some union songs with Larry Penn in Milwaukee.
These songs are stories from my life. In "Best" I describe how my wife Carole sat next to me as I hunched over the steering wheel and drove down thousands of miles of two-lane highways and dirt roads, from Copper Harbor, Michigan to Starved Rock, Illinois, to Hammondsport, New York. Anyone who could put up with all that for so long should be loved the best.
This is my personal musical journey from country to folk, protest songs to blues and, finally, to whatever it is that I do today. I hope you enjoy listening to these songs as much as I enjoyed creating them.
