about

"My friend Darryl Holter has lived many lives--as an enlightened academic, as an imaginative entrepreneur, as an urban revitalizer, as a compassionate manager of people and businesses, and most recently as Woody Guthrie scholar. Throughout those various incarnations, he has remained a singer and a songwriter with a keen eye for observation and an innate ability to shape words and music notes into universal observations.
This Minnesota ode celebrates characters and landmarks long gone from the cityscape. It speaks of a period of time when Snaker Ray, Little Sun, and Spider John worked the Scholar and mesmerized a kid from Hibbing named Zimmerman, when the poet Berryman weaved truth with beauty in each and every phrase he wrote and spoke, when music filled the air from the living room of 117 Cedar to the counter of the joints, and the entire West Bank hummed and buzzed with energy and electricity. These touchstones and icons may have vanished from the North Country, relegated to the faded memories of a precious few. But these songs and the vivid imagery within them bring it back home for just a little bit, for the sake of the song, for as long as the music lasts.
I wouldn't have missed it for the world."
