Guthrie wrote a number of songs that described some of the problems facing migrant families who had left rural areas for a new life in the big city. Big City Ways is a cautionary tale that tells the story of Brother John who came to Los Angeles and fell into bad “big city” habits such as drinking and buying on credit. No wonder Guthrie advised “Eastern Refugees” to avoid those “big city ways.” A recording of this song was discovered in 1999 in Los Angeles and it is believed to be the oldest recording ever made by Guthrie.
