about

I began working with these songs a few years ago after receiving a Woody Guthrie Archives/BMI-funded fellowship for research on Guthrie. I wanted to look at Guthrie’s years in Los Angeles because it was here where he became a minor radio celebrity, began writing more of his own songs, met with political activists and writers, and developed the unique “political Okie” persona that defined him in the public eye. Guthrie was greatly influenced by his experiences in L.A., but he also left his mark to urban intellectuals and political activists, thus laying the groundwork for the urban folk revival of the ‘60s.
I had a great time arranging the songs and working with a talented group of musicians. Since Guthrie’s radio show “Woody and Lefty Lou” featured Maxine Crissman, who sang duets with Woody, I wanted to bring some fantastic female voices into the mix to try to capture some of that sound. We were so fortunate to be able to work with Sara Watkins and Ani DiFranco. And it was truly exciting to collaborate on a song with my daughter, Julia Holter. I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as I enjoyed making it.
