about

In 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt unpacked a raft of new legislation aimed at stimulating the economy, getting jobless workers back to work, expanding welfare to stimulate consumer demand, and making it easier for workers to form unions. These programs were described by the President as “The New Deal”. Guthrie supports the programs and the leaders behind them, but feels that they are too slow in coming. After several long years, still, “we’re looking for that New Deal now,” references to Roosevelt and Governor Culbert Olson, the progressive Democrat elected in November 1938.
