about

This is a dreamy Guthrie poem that Jeff Tweedy and Wilco arranged and recorded on their "Mermaid Avenue" album in 1998. One advantage of Southern California weather was that you could sleep outside without worrying about freezing weather or frequent rainfall. Who doesn’t like the idea of calmly drifting off while viewing a beautiful canopy of stars? While many of Guthrie’s radio songs were critical of the way migrant workers were treated in California, this song is upbeat as Guthrie tells listeners that he wants to “rest my weary bones tonight beneath a bed of California stars”.
