about

This song is from a poem Guthrie wrote. Jonatha Brooke recorded a great arrangement of this song in 2008. I was intrigued by one of the few songs that Guthrie wrote with a female narrator and struck by how honest his lyrics sounded in a woman’s voice. Most men I know couldn’t run off a list of flowers the way Guthrie does: not just roses, daisies, and violets but also forget-me-nots, phlox, buttercups, and four o’clocks. I worked on this arrangement and ran it past my daughter, Julia. She offered a couple of important changes. Fortunately she was in town when we were recording so she could sing one of Guthrie’s most beautiful compositions.
