about

One of the neighborhood children asked Woody where he had come from. Woody quickly answered: “The Oklahoma Hills”. That gave him an idea for an upbeat new song that glorified the wonders of his youthful years. The song features references to the natural beauty of the area where “giant blackjack trees are kissed by playful prairie breezes.” In the chorus the narrator recalls riding ponies on the Indian Reservation and indeed the original version included a complete list of the Indian tribes in the area: “the Osage, Choctah, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole.” Guthrie’s cousin, Jack Guthrie, who had been the lead singer for the radio show prior to Lefty Lou’s arrival, must have remembered the song because in 1945 Jack recorded “Oklahoma Hills” and it quickly rose to the top of the charts. But Jack’s recording, perhaps for commercial reasons, had eliminated the references to the Indian tribes. Our version restores the tribes to their proper place in the lyrics.
