about

Guthrie enjoyed writing “answer songs”—songs that took a popular song and altered the lyrics to provide an answer to the first song. In this case, Guthrie took a popular song from The Carter Family called “I Can’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”, and turned it into another song with a very different message. In the original version the singers lament the sinful ways of the world, but find satisfaction in the belief that a wonderful new life awaits them in heaven. In Guthrie’s song we hear the story of a farmer who lost his home and family and is now out on the road trying to survive. Unlike the Carter Family, Guthrie hopes for a home in THIS life.
