In this story of an uprooted family driving across the desert toward Los Angeles, Guthrie describes a harrowing ride on a mountain road in an old Ford and, after arriving in Los Angeles, feeding the family with two borrowed potatoes and some water. Guthrie used the talking blues formula for several of his songs and this may have been the first. With its low-key, conversational approach, the talking blues style works very well for telling stories and tall tales.
